Building Homes! Rebuilding Lives!
We Make A Life By What We Give
Sir Winston Churchill said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
Now, Habitat for Humanity of Washington County offers you an opportunity to share in that giving and promote your businesses or organization to more than 500 persons by becoming a sponsor in its 16th Annual Dinner Auction. Proceeds from the event are used to build Habitat for Humanity homes.
Many residents of Washington County are living in houses beyond their means. Most them have low-incomes and many struggle to just make rent payments. Often the homes are in neighborhoods with drugs and gangs or run-down and far too small for a family. There's nothing safe and decent about them.
The funds raised at this event are used to help Habitat build affordable housing for low-income families in Washington County. But, Habitat provides more than just safe, decent housing. Habitat provides home ownership, because home ownership is better for communities. A rental family moves more frequently, into and out of school districts.
Neighborhoods with higher rates of homeownership tend to be more stable.
They become people with a vested interest in their neighborhood.
Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. It works in partnership with needy families to meet these housing challenges in our community.
The homes are built with volunteer labor and the "sweat equity" of the approved applicant for home ownership. The applicant's family must contribute 500 hours of labor with Habitat before taking title to the home. Habitat sells the homes at no profit and offers a zero interest mortgage. Payments from the homeowners are used to build more homes.
Everyone benefits from a Habitat house. Local families in need get a "hand-up" out of substandard over-priced housing. The children of homeowners enjoy better grades and improved health through a better, more stable environment. Habitat volunteers learn new skills while making a difference and making new friends. And every citizen in Washington County benefits through better neighborhoods and increase to the tax base.
As a sponsor you can help make all of this possible. Sponsorship opportunities are available in several categories: $99 - $499 Hope Builder;$500 Lumberjack; $1,000 Foundation Builder; $2,000 Wall Raiser; $5,000 Home Builder and $10,000 Life Builder.
The Dinner Auction is Habitat for Humanity of Washington County's largest fundraiser. It has been sold out for the past five years with up to 560 people in attendance. People that know the importance of supporting Habitat's work of providing decent homes for families in need. The 2008 event set a record with over $80,000 raised.
