Adaptive Sports Foundation Celebrates Its Second Season at Whitetail Resort

(Mercersburg, PA) The Two Top Mountain Adaptive Sports Foundation, an established non-profit organization based at Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg, PA, is looking forward to its second season of providing quality recreational activities to community members with special needs.
During last year's winter season, a variety of disabled ski lessons were taught. According to Bill Dietrich, the director of the program, "Last season at Whitetail, we taught wheelchair bound guests how to ski in a bi-ski or mono-ski, which are skiing devices where quests sit in a seat mounted on one or two skis. These guests become able to ski and ride the lift independently." The program also taught three-track skiing to amputees, as well as children and adults with the following disabilities: Attention Deficit Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Deafness, Down Syndrome and the Visually Impaired.
Dietrich said that a big focus of the program is working with disabled veterans, "We are working closely with Disabled Sports U.S.A to develop ongoing programs for our wounded soldiers of past and present wars."
According to the Sports Foundation organizers, participation in sports and recreational activities is a great way for anyone to stay healthy, increase their self-esteem and develop confidence. For individuals with special needs, participation in sports not only increases their self-esteem and shows them a healthy lifestyle, but also increases their sense of self worth. By accomplishing the skills of a particular sport, disabled individuals can take that new found self confidence back to their everyday lives.
Skiing and snowboarding opportunities will again begin with the opening of Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg, PA for the 2008-2009 Season.
According to Dietrich, sponsorship opportunities are available. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to Two Top Mountain Adaptive Sports Foundation, Inc. at 675 Mower Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Funds raised help provide ski equipment for the disabled.
