Life by Design: Midlife Evaluation
Life by Design
My kids are grown and building their own lives and my husband and I are thrilled to be starting this next phase of our lives. While we were raising our kids, we put some important dreams aside for later - we wanted to travel, start up our own business, and I wanted to become an artist. Well, now it's later and I don't know if I still want those things or not.
Did you know in a very short time 20% of the US population will be over the age of 65? An estimated forty million American women are now in or past menopause and every seven and one-half seconds for the next ten years another woman will reach mid-life!
This gift of mid-life and beyond is a shining, wonderful gift full of magic and possibilities. What are you going to do with it?
* Do you stay drudging through a life you have outgrown?
* Do you retire to sit in the study while you wait for yourself to slowly come to a halt?
* Do you pick up some old dream that got tossed by the wayside and try and make it happen even though it has no heart any more?
How dreary can this be!
You have years and years in front of you. You are beginning the longest period of adulthood and often the most fulfilling.
At this age of your life you don't have to stake out your territory like you did in your 20s or hurry up to reach your major life goals before you are "too old" like you did in your 30s.
No, your task now is much more interesting. After you get over the shock that everything in your life comes up for a major reevaluation you realize that you have landed in a new level of consciousness. Your task in your 50s, 60s and beyond is to take this new level of consciousness and adopt an expanded involvement with the world as you get to know yourself more intimately and deeply.
Where to begin? It is so simple you might want to dismiss it - but don't. Begin by asking yourself, every day throughout the day in all different types of situations, "What do I really want here?" And just be still and wait and let the answer come to you.
As you practice getting in touch with what you want in everyday situations, your intuitive/guidance muscle will grow stronger and more confident. In a very short time, you will be familiar enough with it to ask the bigger questions like, "What do I want to do with my life now?"
And when an answer comes try it out. Do a few art projects see how you like it. Take a short trip and see if it feels like an adventure. At this age of life it finally comes down to "What do I want?" and "What makes me happy?".
Try it. You'll like it! :)
