Wisdom From a Furry Friend: Buddy, a Great Friend

Wisdom From a Furry Friend
Buddy, a Great Friend

Hi. My name is Buddy. I am a Guinea Pig. I am brown and white and I have a short smooth coat and deep black eyes. You know, Guinea Pigs are very nice to have around! We are very sweet and very social and we prefer to be with our families. We like lots of space to roam around and exercise, so we like to be out of our enclosures and with our people.
We are relatively easy to care for because we actually like and need a lot of the same things people do. Just like people, we don't manufacture our own vitamin C so we need to get it in our food or as a supplement. Pellets usually contain vitamins C but sometimes the vitamin C breaks down and then we don't get enough. So you need to make sure our food has lots of vitamin C in it.
The foods that contain the very important vitamin C are spinach, kale, turnip greens, romaine lettuce and dandelion greens. Don't give us iceberg lettuce because it is mostly water and doesn't provide any nutrition. Cabbage, red and green peppers, asparagus, peas, oranges, kiwi and tomatoes also have lots of vitamin C. Hay is important for us, too. Grass hays such as timothy or orchard grass are the best for mature adults while alfalfa is best for younger, growing Guinea Pigs.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are good for us. We like carrots, carrot tops, apple, apricots, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapes and strawberries are yummy and very good for us.
It is nice to have a pet that is different than other people's pets, you know. We are very different than you dog or cat, but we are just as much fun to be with! Did you know that Guinea Pigs whistle? Yup. We are really good at it and we will talk to you by whistling. Don't you think that is great?
You know, all pets need to be taken care of. We need food and water every day and sometimes you need to check a couple of times to make sure we have what we need. We also need attention and exercise. I know some pets seem content to be in their own enclosures but I can tell you, it is really nice to have someone talk to us and pet us and take us out for exercise. We get bored and can become sad if it seems no one cares about us. I guess you could say we are a lot like you and other people.
Well, I hope I convinced you what nice pets we make. If you would like to meet me come on over to the Humane Society of Washington County and say you would like to meet Buddy, the Guinea Pig. I will be very sweet and I sure would like to meet you!
See you soon!
