The South Carolina Five

Five darling Cocker Spaniels are in need of temporary foster homes. They were dumped in the overnight "drop off pen" at a shelter in South Carolina - most likely by a backyard breeder - where they had little chance to survive. Their care would have cost the shelter more than they could afford to spend on only five dogs - when they had so many more who could be adopted "ready to go." In addition, the shelter was full at the time, so the only place for them was the outside pen. The dedicated volunteers did the best they could, giving them sweaters and wrapping the outside pen in plastic to protect them from the freezing temperatures.
No local rescue offered to help any of them. No one seemed to care. They were messy, after all. But Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center, Inc. couldn't let it happen. They shifted into high gear to get them to Maryland. The South Carolina Five arrived last week and the fight for their lives has now begun in earnest. They were in terrible condition with open sores and mats so tight that one of them couldn't even stand. An untreated eye condition left one of them totally blind.
Now, they have been cleaned up and care is being taken of their various illnesses - from infections to parasites to serious malnutrition. They are in rough shape, but each Cocker is so sweet and gentle, it's been worth it.
Right now, the only thing available when they are released from the vet hospital is a boarding kennel...but what they really need is loving homes and open hearts waiting for them. They will improve by leaps and bounds if they have those.
They have been given regal names: Diana, Duchess, Elizabeth, Henry, and William. Some are posted with updated photos and bios at
