Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten Registration Dates Available for 2008-2009 School Year

Hagerstown, MD (February 4, 2008)- Four dates have been scheduled to register kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children for the 2008-2009 school year in the Washington County Public Schools. To be eligible for pre-kindergarten, a child must be 4 years old by September 1, 2008. To be eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year, a child must be 5 years old by September 1, 2008. Registration will be held at individual school locations on the following Wednesdays:
* April 16
* May 14
* July 9
Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration is not limited to those dates, but school staff recommends scheduling an appointment in advance if registration must be completed on another date.
The pre-kindergarten program will be available in 2008-2009 at Bester, Clear Spring, Funkstown, Hancock, Hickory, Lincolnshire, Salem Avenue, Sharpsburg, Smithsburg, and Winter Street elementary schools, and Robinwood Early Childhood Center. In addition, the program is available at The Learning Center at the former Surrey School in Hagerstown and the Children's Learning Center at Hagerstown Community College.
Eastern Elementary School will not have pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes in 2008-2009. Students who live within Eastern's attendance zone and are eligible for those programs will attend Funkstown Elementary School. Students who will attend Rockland Woods Elementary School may register at the Central Office on Commonwealth Avenue, Hagerstown, or at their current school.
Pre-kindergarten applicants must meet income eligibility guidelines. For more information about those guidelines, call 301-766-2955. To be eligible for consideration for early admission to kindergarten, the child must be five years old by October 31st. To begin the early admissions assessment process, parents/guardians must send a written request to the Director of Student Services by July 31, 2008.
To enroll a child in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, the following must be provided: Birth certificate, social security number, immunization record, blood lead screening and proof of residency (current property tax bill, rental bill, utility bill, mortgage statement or credit card bill) with parent name and address on it. You CANNOT use a driver's license, cell phone bill, or telephone bill. The child will also need a physical before the start of school.
