Principal Changes Announced; Transition to Begin in February

Hagerstown, MD (January 25, 2008)- The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) approved three administrative transfers at the Tuesday, January 22, 2008. BOE business meeting. Kathy Stiles, current principal at Bester Elementary, was named the new principal at Rockland Woods Elementary School, scheduled to open for the 2008-2009 school year. Kristi Bachtell will move from Emma K. Doub Elementary School to replace Mrs. Stiles and Dr. Betsy Donohoe was approved as the new principal at Emma K. Doub. Dr. Donohoe has been serving as the school system's supervisor of advanced programs.
Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) has initiated a plan to support the transition for the new principals appointed to Bester, Emma K. Doub, and Rockland Woods. Mike Markoe, Acting Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, is confident that a mid-year transition will work well. "Ample time will be dedicated to ensure a successful transition. A transition period of up to two months will provide the opportunity for administrators to work together, to consult on major decisions, to review details of each school's operations, and to meet with staff and the school community. Throughout this process, it will be the goal of WCPS to maintain quality instruction for the students and to support the unique needs of each learning community."
Maryland School Assessments (MSA), scheduled for the first two weeks of April, should not be affected by the changes. According to Mr. Markoe, "The effort and work invested by the students and staff from the beginning of the school year will not be sidetracked by a change in administrators. We know the staff will continue its high level of effective instruction for the remainder of the school year."
