Critter-Proofing Your Home This Winter

Critter-Proofing Your Home This Winter

Hagerstown-MD- The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) offers suggestions to help you keep wildlife from invading your home this winter.
As the temperatures continue to drop, wildlife seeks warmer shelter just as humans do. The Humane Society of Washington County and the HSUS want residents of Washington County and surrounding communities to be aware of the places animals may find refuge from the cold.
Before the cold weather sets in, check your house from top to bottom. Be methodical and don't overlook anything. Be sure you check your attic, chimney's windows, and ventilation openings such as dryer exhaust vents. Make sure they are covered properly. It is also a good time to consider closing off pet doors until the weather warms up.
Check your house's siding for warping and gaps, the foundation for holds from settling and look behind downspouts and drains for holds that have been gnawed or scratched into the house. Be sure to look under porches and inside work sheds. Animals will hide wherever they can find a warm dry location. Secure the trash and compost piles. They can attract unwanted visitors that can become a nuisance.
