Listen Up! I Have An Idea For You!
Are you working on your Christmas Gift list? Well, listen up! I might have an idea or two for you!
Did you ever think about giving "a box of nails" as a gift? Or, perhaps, a "bundle of shingles?" Maybe flooring or exterior siding? What about a sink? A window? All of these things are possible, and they don't have to be gift-wrapped. You can give these items from the comfort of your home.
And, 'to whom will I be giving these items?' you might ask! Well, the recipient will be a family that is not currently living in a decent, comfortable home. Let me tell you how it works! Simply write a check and send it to Habitat for Humanity of Washington County, 20 South Prospect Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740. You may even give this gift in honor of family, friends, or businesses of your choice, and Habitat will send a card to each person or company at your request.
You are making more than just a donation, you are making a better tomorrow for families in your community . . . your neighbors! Habitat for Humanity, an ecumenical Christian housing ministry, is a volunteer-based organization. It addresses the most basic of human needs, a place to live and grow, by providing decent, affordable housing for low-income families. Your tax deductible gift will help buy some of the many items needed to build one of these homes.
Safe, affordable housing is a basic need for every family. Some of us really do not understand that because we never had to face these issues. We have been fortunate enough to grow up in a decent place to live. Not so with every family! Catastrophes and tragedies have erupted the lives of many families. It has been a lifetime struggle for many to regain a home. Some have never been able to do so. Habitat for Humanity is a vehicle to provide that opportunity! Habitat touches lives! It helps families achieve the dream of owning a home. It provides a program where families seeking to own a home can work 500 "sweat equity" hours alongside volunteers to build that home. Then they are allowed to purchase it at no profit and with zero interest loans, making payments they can afford. The homes are built with donated materials or with materials purchased with donated funds. Funding is essential! That's where your gift can help build a home. Your gifts of cash to buy a "box of nails" or one of the other items I mentioned earlier in this column can go a long way to help build a home.
If you open your heart, and send a cash gift, you will open doors to families in need. This hand-up can dramatically improve their lives by providing a family a decent place to raise their children. I urge you to put Habitat on your gift list today! For more information, please call the Habitat office at 301-791-9009.
