Building Homes! Rebuilding Lives!
Help Build It!
It takes more than schools, businesses and homes to make a community. It takes volunteers! It takes you! You can help build Tomorrow, Today!
Habitat for Humanity supporters come together with hammers and other talents to improve their communities. It doesn't take much to make a big difference! The American Dream of Home ownership is out of reach for many hardworking families, even those with two breadwinners! This dream can become a reality through Habitat! You can help build it and bring smiles to the faces of many families.
Habitat for Humanity empowers low-income families by partnering with them to build decent, affordable housing. Habitat doesn't give the houses away, but rather sells them to families in need through no-profit loans. The majority of family members whose lives improve through Habitat housing are children. For them a decent place to live makes all the difference in the world. The world's housing need is immense, but so is Habitat's resolve to meet it. Please help by volunteering time, services or money!
Habitat for Humanity's commitment to meeting the needs of families in poverty housing has never been stronger. Through the combined efforts of all U.S. affiliates, Habitat for Humanity moved up from 18th in 2005 on the top 100 home-builder's list to be ranked 16th by Builder's Magazine for 2006. Habitat closed 5,820 homes in the U.S. and 20,000 in 95 countries worldwide.
Habitat's goal is to do away with poverty housing by working in partnership with approved, low-income families to move them out of substandard housing into decent, affordable homes, not as tenants, but as homeowners. Anthropologist Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; it's the only thing that ever has."
The goal is surely achievable, but not without help of a group of thoughtful, dedicated citizens. Habitat calls them volunteers! Habitat needs workers, both skilled and unskilled, to help with construction projects. Habitat needs "build-able" land. Habitat needs qualified partner families, as well as volunteers to help prepare families for homeownership. Habitat needs volunteer coordinators, office workers, and computer knowledgeable persons. Habitat needs volunteers to help solicit cash and in-kind donations. Habitat needs volunteers to prepare meals and provide water for workers on the build site. Habitat needs volunteers to write letters, articles and grants. Habitat needs prayer. In other words, no matter what your skills or interests may be, HABITAT NEEDS YOU!
Studies show that people who volunteer live longer, healthier and happier lives. It provides a way to give back a portion of what one has received. Remember a volunteer is a person who believes that people can make a difference, and is willing to prove it! Are you that person? If you are, and would like to get involved with Habitat's volunteer program to help your community, contact Sharon Hawkins at the Habitat office, 301-791-9009, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
