Old Friends in the Stable: Nina

Old Friends in the Stable
Nina

Nina is a beautiful horse who lives at the Ranger Foundation of Greenbriar Farm in Keedysville, Maryland.
Officially named Santa Inez, the 27-year-old chestnut Argentinean mare retired to the farm in the fall of 2001 from Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
She came in a big rig with other horses, and had her own stall area because she absolutely could not be tied.
Nina spent her years as a polo pony at Valley Forge Military Academy. She was valued at $27,000 when she was donated to the school.
When Nina arrived at Greenbriar Farm, she was impossible to catch in the pasture for care and grooming.
A teenaged Ranger Foundation volunteer was up to the challenge, and patiently worked with the horse. A trusting relationship developed. After a few years of retirement with just treats or a nice grooming session, Nina is now easily caught, and has been successfully tied. Once caught, she adores the attention lavished on her.
The Ranger Foundation is a non-profit retirement home for horses that have served people either as police horses, military horses, or therapeutic riding horses. Its mission is to give quality care in a peaceful setting to these horses. The organization is entirely staffed by volunteers.
Each month sponsors are sought for the horses, either as individuals or businesses. Sponsorships are $100/month, which covers feed, supplements, veterinarian, farrier, and dentist. There are also half-sponsorships of $50 a month available, as well as $1,000 donations, which count for one full year. Businesses and distant individual sponsors will receive periodic reports and photos of their horses, nearby sponsors may visit and care for their horse.
Nina is currently half-sponsored.
