Schools in the Spotlight

Students from Emma K. Doub School for Integrated Arts & Technology will plant several seedlings from the Wye Oak, the Maryland State Tree, at Fairview Outdoor Education Center at 11:30AM on Wednesday, April 5, 2006. The ceremony is in observance of Arbor Day and the 100th anniversary of the Maryland Forest Board. The Maryland Forest Service donated the trees.

South Hagerstown High School Band students head off for a 5-day, 4-night cruise to Cozumel, Mexico beginning April 17-21.

On April 6, 2006 at Salem Avenue Elementary School, Ken Long will lead an open discussion regarding alcohol and teens at 9:30AM.

The first Smithsburg Elementary Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge was held in January. The winner was Ashleigh Baxter, who competed in six rounds to become the fifth-grade champion. Great job, Ashleigh!

Head Start of Washington County received a contract recently to offer the Children's Literacy Initiative curriculum to children through age 5. Head Start will serve 372 children in 13 classrooms, according to information provided by the county. The curriculum is aimed at preparing "socio-economically disadvantaged" children for school.
