HCC's Volunteer Program

HCC's Volunteer Program

Hagerstown Community College recently hired retired HCC radiography professor Judy Kofoet to lead its new volunteer program.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to give members of the community the opportunity to take part in the college life," she said. "Volunteers bring their skills and knowledge to the college, thereby enhancing student learning and the overall college environment."
Since 1988, HCC has been served by a group of individuals who volunteer their time in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center. The dedication and enthusiasm exhibited by this group spared interest by HCC President Guy Altieri to create a similar volunteer corps that would serve other areas of the college.
The history of volunteering at Hagerstown Community College is long. Perhaps the earliest volunteering was done by Dr. Mable Walter and her company of volunteers when the arboretum came into being in 1970. Friends of Hagerstown Community College Gardens, the college's own garden club, is carrying on the work of those earlier volunteers.
There are a variety of opportunities for volunteering at HCC. A person can volunteer on a weekly schedule in some specific area of the college or sign on to help with a short-term project or special event. Volunteers are officially appointed by HCC's board of trustees each semester. For more information contact Kofoet at 301-790-2800, ext. 217.
