55th Springs Folk Festival Oct. 5 & 6

The Springs Folk Festival will get your foot-a-tapping with continual music performances including country bluegrass, clogging and the lilting tones of Mennonite a Capella singers in the large music building. The 55th Festival will feature over 100 live demonstrations of days gone by. See how our ancestors made everything from the clothing they wore to the musical instruments used to lighten their day. One of a kind handcrafts made as you watch by juried craftsmen will be sure to make your shopping of unique items a breeze. All ages will enjoy the hayrides, sheep shearing, and antique farm equipment demonstrations. A pageant portraying the initial Amish and Mennonite settlement of the area will be presented in the afternoons.
Your appetite will be satisfied as you sample the PA Dutch foods. All items are meticulously prepared from the bean soup to the hand-picked blackberries for pies. Signature items are the smoked sausage, Dutch fried potatoes, and dried corn as well as the pancake and sausage meal served all day, representative of the diet of early German and Swiss Amish and Mennonite settlers of the area.
View how apple butter is prepared as well as sample homemade bread baked in an outside bake oven, spread with a choice of homemade butter or locally made Beachy apple butter. A maple sugar camp guides you through the process of creating maple candies and syrup. Watch the creation of spruce beer, making of sauerkraut, frying donuts and roasting peanuts.
Admission price includes demonstrations, music performances, museum tours and pageant. Parking is free. The Springs Folk Festival will be held Friday and Saturday October 5 and 6, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and is located on 1711 Springs Rd., Springs, PA 15562, 4 miles north of Grantsville, MD I-68 exit 19.
