Fish News: Good Action on Gaffer Dolphin

Fish News
Good Action on Gaffer Dolphin
by Dr. Ken Neill, III

Cobias have arrived in force and more have been spotted in the ocean headed our way. Spadefish are being caught at the Cell, Wolftrap, the Chesapeake Light Tower, and along the CBBT. A lot of small gray trout can be found at the Concrete Ships and near the high rise of the CBBT. The red drum bite continues to be strong. Black drum are being caught by anglers targeting red drum on the shoals and by anglers casting jigs at the islands of the CBBT. Offshore, there has been good action on gaffer dolphin in the Triple 0s area. Some billfish have been encountered in the same area. Yellowfin and bluefin tuna can be found on the Fingers and bluefin tuna are also on the inshore humps like the Hot Dog, 26-Mile Hill, and 21-Mile Hill. The only problem with trying to catch a tuna is all of the bluefish that are around.
June 12, Don and David Forman fished for cobia at the Inner Middle Grounds. They caught and released one cobia that decided to eat an eel.
June 12, I ran over and looked at the Anglo-African. I did not see any spadefish. I then went fishing for amberjack bait. No luck at the 3rd or 4th islands of the CBBT. A lot of small trout at the Concrete Ships. All of the 13-inch croaker and amberjack you could want at the high rise. I guess we will be stopping off at the South Tower on our next offshore run.
June 11, I ran down to the Triple 0s out of Rudee with Jorj Head, Matt Rinck, Stephen Powell, and Richie Moore. We caught 7-gaffer dolphin and Richie caught his first mako shark.
June 11, Capt. Richard Bartlett, (757) 876-5376, took a charter to the Triple 0s. They had a catch of dolphin up to 35 pounds. They also had a blue marlin in the spread but he did not eat anything with a hook in it. He liked the teaser a lot though.
June 11, Steve Martin fished out of Hatteras. They caught a couple of gaffer dolphin and had a blue marlin hooked up until it spooled the 50.
June 10, Steve Martin fished out of Hatteras. They caught 4 nice dolphin.
June 10, Capt. Richard Bartlett took a charter to the Triple 0s. They caught gaffer dolphin including two over 20 pounds. They also caught two makos.
June 10, Don Forman fished the Chesapeake Light Tower for spadefish. They hooked up 5, boating 3 up to 21 inches.
June 9, Darren Foster fished the Inner Middle Ground for red drum. They caught 2. The big one was Darren's 48-inch fish. The other fish was 42 inches long.
June 8, Darren Foster fished the Chesapeake Light Tower. They caught 4 spadefish to 21 inches. They saw a lot more. They also saw several amberjack swimming with the spades.
June 6, Danny Taylor fished out of Hatteras. They caught 3-gaffer dolphin and a white marlin.
June 5, Danny Taylor fished out of Hatteras. They caught 25 dolphin off of a huge weed line. The fish ranged from 10 to 25 pounds.
