Horse of the Month: Poco--May Horse at The Ranger Foundation, Inc.
Horse of the Month
Poco--May Horse at The Ranger Foundation, Inc.
Poco has been named the May Horse of the Month at the Ranger Foundation of Greenbriar Farm in Keedysville, Maryland. Officially named Poco Pour Point, the 35 year old registered palomino Quarter Horse is the oldest girl at the farm. She retired from Star Equestrian Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, where she worked as a therapeutic riding horse.
Poco is a very calm quiet mare, very suited to her career, and now in her retirement, for new volunteers to work with in learning horse care. She spends her days in a big pasture followed around by her buddy, fellow Ranger retiree, Gary Owen, who can't stand for her to be out of his sight.
In her younger years, Poco won several 4-H championships at the Virginia State Fair. She also found time to be a good mother, hence is being honored in May for Mother's Day. She is pictured here with one of her babies.
The Ranger Foundation is a non-profit retirement home for horses that have served people either as police horses, military horses, or therapeutic riding horses. Its mission is to give quality care in a peaceful setting to these horses. The organization is entirely staffed by volunteers.
Each month sponsors are sought for the horses, either as individuals or businesses. Sponsorships are $100/month, which covers feed, supplements, veterinarian, farrier, and dentist. There are also half-sponsorships of $50 a month available, as well as $1,000 donations, which count for one full year. Businesses and distant individual sponsors will receive periodic reports and photos of their horses, nearby sponsors may visit and care for their horse.
