Building Homes! Rebuilding Lives! A Salute To The Women!
Building Homes! Rebuilding Lives!
A Salute To The Women!
by William L. Bulla
Historically, we, as a nation of proud people, have always "saluted" those who have done some meritorious action for our country and its citizens. We have often saluted them with terms such as "Great job!" "Good work!" "Thumbs Up!" "Hooray!" and other terms of appreciation.
Those same terms are in order for the citizens of Washington County to use for the extraordinary job being done by the Women's Build of Habitat for Humanity of Washing County.
This group of dedicated women has already constructed three houses in our county since 2005. They are currently working on their fourth one at 1018 Lanvale Street. This has been an added challenge because they are pursuing it during a difficult economical time. Not only are they pouring cement, saw lumber, driving nails, painting and all the many other physical tasks needed to erect a house, but they are also "pounding the pavements" to raise the funds needed to complete the job.
Currently they are involved in a raffle of Baltimore Ravens football tickets. The raffle is for two club-level seats (valued at $500.00) to the Ravens vs. Lions game at M&T Stadium on December 13th. $5 per raffle ticket. Proceeds will benefit Habitat's Women Build program. The drawing will be held Sunday, October 25th (no need to be present). Tickets can be purchased at Habitat ReStore, 100 Charles St. (old Coca Cola building) Tuesday - Friday 9am -5pm, Saturday 8am - 2pm or by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
This team of women, from all walks of life, is willing to accept the many challenge's of physically building a house from start to finish. Some of these women have worked on Habitat homes as volunteers alongside the men volunteers gaining some knowledge of the construction business. Many others, however, took special courses offered by Lowe's, the national underwriter of the Women Build program.
Habitat for Humanity of Washington County, a non-profit Christian organization, touches many lives! It helps families to achieve the dream of owning a home. Habitat empowers low-income families by partnering with them to build decent, affordable housing. It provides a program where families seeking to own a home commit to 500-hours of "sweat equity" working alongside volunteers to build that home. Then they are allowed to purchase it at no profit and with zero interest loans, making payments they can afford. The majority of family members, whose lives improve through Habitat's housing, are children. For them, a decent place to live makes all the difference in the world.
Yes, the Women's Build is doing it again! They're building homes and rebuilding lives? Hooray! Hooray! Great Job! All women wanting to make a difference in the lives of children and families in our community are invited to help out. There are many ways other than driving nails to accomplish the work of Women's Build. Why don't you consider joining them as part of this exciting volunteer project by contacting Habitat for Humanity office at 301-791-9009?
