Suns Chili Cook-Off Benefactor Announced

Suns Chili Cook-Off Benefactor Announced

Hagerstown, MD: Proceeds from the sixth annual Hagerstown Suns Chili Cook-Off will benefit the Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross, the Suns announced last Wednesday.
The announcement was made at the Red Cross' annual Heroes Breakfast on Wednesday morning. Suns' president Bob Flannery addressed those in attendance, explaining his team's choice to partner with the American Red Cross.
"The Suns couldn't be happier than to see the proceeds from our Chili Cook-Off stay right here in Washington County," Flannery said. "We're excited to be putting on a really great event, and to be giving back to a really great charity."
The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross responds to local emergencies, assists military families, and trains people in lifesaving skills such as CPR, first aid, and water safety. Funds raised by the Chili Cook-Off will also go towards blood-drive efforts and disaster relief in Washington County.
"It is a wonderful feeling knowing that the Hagerstown Suns and the Red Cross will be working together to continue to give back to our community and support local programs," said Maria Johns, Director of Financial Development for the American Red Cross Washington County chapter.
2009 Chili Cook-Off will take place at noon on Saturday, October 3 at Municipal Stadium. Ticket-holders will have the opportunity to sample chili from a wide variety of different cook teams competing for a $1,000 prize for the chili deemed "Best Overall." The event is expected to draw upwards of 2,000 people.
Each year, local community and business leaders join the Suns on a committee to organize the Chili Cook-Off and select a new charity that will benefit from the year's event.
"As a member of the Board of Directors for the Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross and a committee member for the Hagerstown Suns Chili Cook-Off, I see this partnership as a perfect match," said Tom Riford, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitor's Bureau. "I am extremely pleased to see a partnership between two great local organizations."
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Sponsorship opportunities are available by calling the Suns at 301-791-6266.
