Waynesboro: Area residents are invited to a "star party," a telescope viewing of the night sky on Thursday, April 2 from 8:00 until 10:30pm at Renfrew Park, Waynesboro. Telescopes will be set up in the back yard of the museum house. The event, a partnership between the adult education committee of Renfrew Institute and Tri-State Astronomers, is free and open to the public.
Members of the Tri-State Astronomers club will be on hand to guide viewers and answer questions. Event coordinator, Andy Smetzer said, "2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. One of the goals is to have as many people as possible look through a telescope."
During the star party, "We will be observing various nebula and star clusters of the spring night sky," Smetzer said. Viewers may come and go anytime during the event.
For more information, Smetzer suggests these websites: www.astronomy2009.org/, www.tristateastronomers.org and www.spaceweather.com.
Those attending may bring their own telescope and binoculars, as well as lawn chairs or blankets. Flashlights are not permitted in the telescope viewing area but may be used to reach the area from the parking lot.
Participants may park in Renfrew's lower lot off Welty Road. Limited parking for those needing assistance is available behind the visitors center.
Support for this event provided by Renfrew Institute's Today's Horizon Fund contributors: Emma W. Hutton Trust, PenMar Development Corp., Nora Roberts Foundation, and an Anonymous Donor. Facility support is provided courtesy of Renfrew Museum and Park.
If the sky is mostly cloudy, the star party will be cancelled.
