Yippee! It's About To Happen!
Yippee! It's about to happen! The many volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Washington County are very excited about the big event. Yes, after much planning and hard work the Habitat ReStore is to open at 100 Charles Street in Hagerstown. The planned date is April 1.
A ReStore is a home improvement store that accepts donations of overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials donated by businesses or individuals, and resells these products to the general public at a substantially reduced cost.
A ReStore will provide funding so Habitat can build simple, decent, affordable housing in Washington County.
A ReStore provides reduced cost building materials for use in upgrading and maintaining houses for the general public. In today's economy, this can be very important to many families.
A ReStore also helps protect our economy because building materials and home products are reused instead of being dumped into landfills.
Our Habitat ReStore accepts many items other than lumber and building materials. It accepts appliances, architectural items, cabinets, windows, electrical and lighting material, flooring of all types, paint, plumbing material, hardware and non-upholstered furniture.
You will be able to purchase these items at greatly reduced prices, help protect the environment, and provide funds for a Habitat house. That makes a ReStore a Win-Win-Win for the community, the environment, and Habitat for Humanity. Oh, by the way, Habitat is a 501(C) 3 nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax deductible.
To make a donation is very easy. Just call 301-745-5457 or e-mail Habitat at firstname.lastname@example.org and Habitat will promptly pick up your donation. Also donations may be dropped off at the store on Tuesdays thru Fridays from 9am to 5pm, or on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm.
There are ways to help other than making a donation of materials.
Habitat is always looking for volunteers to help in various capacities in both building and non-building areas. As a volunteer you could help Habitat meet critical local housing needs...those of the low-income families raising their families in inadequate housing.
The goals of Habitat for Humanity is to assist low-income families build their own decent, affordable homes. Habitat for Humanity teaches families how to manage their income and become self-sufficient, responsible homeowners.
Habitat families put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" helping to build their house, and other Habitat houses, giving them knowledge about the construction and a greater sense of pride in their home.
Families pay no-interest mortgage payments to Habitat. Habitat's Family Services Committee has aided families in obtaining better paying jobs with medical insurance. Habitat homeowners have been successful and some have gone on to take college courses. Children of Habitat families benefit the most, with improved health, better grades, and higher likelihood of college and successful careers.
