Washington County Free Library Receives a Grant

The Washington County Free Library is the recipient of a grant from the Maryland Humanities Council in partnership with the PNC Foundation. This grant will fund panel discussions and the production of a website dedicated to the economic influence of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on Washington County and vicinity. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and the Western Maryland Regional Library will partner with the Washington County Free Library to tell the story of life in the canal towns through historic photographs, newspapers, correspondence and oral history. The online display will be a permanent feature on the Western Maryland Historical Library website (www.whilbr.org). Two programs on the C&O Canal and its importance to Washington County and western Maryland are scheduled for Saturday June 13 and Saturday June 20, 2009 and will include canal tours.
