Places to...camp, fish, and boat

So you're ready for your camping, fishing and boating trip. You've gone through your checklist, and everything is accounted for--including fishing poles, bait, and mosquito repellent. You've practiced setting up your tent, and you've become familiar with using your gear. The cooler is packed with food and drinks, and your first aid kit is stocked. Everything is accounted for, and you're ready to go. Now where do you go?
Here's a list of campgrounds, fishing spots, and boat ramps in and around Washington County, Maryland:

Antietam Hagerstown KOA Snug Harbor serves up family fun with planned activities such as magic shows, bands, karaoke, movies, ice cream socials and much more. Blairs Valley Lake is located in both Washington County, Maryland and Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Fish species include largemouth bass, tiger muskie, and bluegill, black crappie, redear sunfish, yellow perch, brown bullhead and carp. Catoctin Mountain Park with 25 miles of hiking trails winding through both Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park a variety of experiences are available such as scenic trails, camping, picnicking, wildlife viewing, and fly-fishing. 6602 Foxville, Thurmont, MD. 301-663-9330.
Cunningham Falls State Park is located in the Catoctin Mountains, is known for its history and scenic beauty, as well as its 78-foot cascading waterfall. Enjoy swimming, boating, camping, trails, hunting, picnicking, fishing, and playgrounds. 14039 Catoctin Hollow, Thurmont, MD. 301-271-7574.
Devil's Backbone Park is the second oldest of Washington County's parks. This nine-acre park includes a picnic pavilion, restrooms, play equipment, picnic tables, grills, a drinking fountain, horseshoe court and parking area. A footbridge across the Antietam Creek, which divides the park, provides access to the "island" section of the park as well as to a nature trail, which ascends to the summit of the ridge from which the park takes its name. The park also offers fishing and an access for canoes to the Antietam Creek. Devil's Backbone Park is located along Route #68 near Lappan's Crossroads. To access the park from the Sharpsburg Pike, Route #65, turn left at Lappan's Crossroads, and continue approximately one and one-half miles on Route #68 toward Boonsboro. The park is on the left.
Greenbrier State Park has the Appalachian Trail pass right through the park. The 42-acre man-made lake and beach draw many visitors who enjoy swimming, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, fishing and hunting, camping, boat launch, boat rental, camp store, flat water canoeing, hiking trails, playground, and mountain biking. 21843 National Pike, Boonsboro, MD. 301-791-4767.
Green Ridge State Forest is the second largest of Maryland's State Forests consisting of a 44,000-acre oak-hickory forest. The state forest offers camping, biking, fishing, boating, hiking, off-road vehicles, and a hunting/shooting range. 28700 Headquarters Dr, NE, Flintstone, MD. 301-478-3124.
Happy Hills Campground is the perfect retreat for couples, family, or friends to enjoy nature. Enjoy camping, swimming, fishing, paddleboats, rowboats, shuffleboard, playgrounds, horseshoes, hot showers, flush toilets, and a camp store. 12617 Seavolt Road, Hancock, MD. 301-678-7760.
McMahons Mill Campground is located in Williamsport on the 88. One mile marker on historic C&O Canal and boasts a Civil War Military & American Heritage Museum. The museum features military items from the 18th and 19th centuries, a Gatlin Gun, antiques, art and technological items.
Rocky Gap State Park has 278 individual campsites, including 30 equipped with electric hook-ups, dump station, bathhouses, a family group site, three youth group camping areas, one boat ramp, boat rentals, laundry and a camp store. There is also a nature center, game room, swimming beach, and pay phones. Ten mini cabins, each with electric, bunk bed and a double bed, are available for rent. Rocky Gap State Park's Lake Habeeb: offers year round recreational opportunities. Boats are allowed on Lake Habeeb 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Treehouse Camp: Maple Tree Campground is twenty acres of beautiful woodland in South Mountain providing an ideal setting for year round camping and hiking.. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park features 90 acres of family fun and activities. Jellystone Park features a heated swimming pool, playgrounds, miniature golf, hiking and biking trails, a 24-hour laundry and live visits from Yogi Bear. Jellystone Park is located on Rt. 68 in Williamsport.
NOTE: On April 1 a new Maryland law governing personal flotation devices (PFDs) for children went into effect. Under the new law, if a child is less than 4 years of age or weighs under 50 pounds, the child must wear a PFD with specific additional safety features including: a strap that is secured between the child's legs to fasten together the front and back of the PFD; an inflatable headrest or high collar to keep the child's head above water; and a web handle to ensure the ready accessibility of the child from the vessel.
