Have a Safe Holiday Season--Pledge to Drive Sober

(ARA)- The holidays often bring out the best in people, and while many are in a good mood, filled with holiday spirit, too many are still trying to cope from the tragedy of drunk driving. Holidays are some of the most dangerous times of the year on the road, due largely to increased drunk driving. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in 2003, alcohol-related traffic crashes killed more than 4,000 people from Thanksgiving to New Year's and 219 deaths occurred over the New Year's holiday.
In order to help prevent these tragedies, participating Maid Brigade, a residential cleaning service, offices throughout the United States are supporting Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)'s mission to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and to prevent underage drinking.
"We feel it is very important for us to give back to the communities we serve," says Bart Puett, president of Maid Brigade. "We are working with MADD because the dangers of drunk driving impact each and every one of us, every day--as individuals and collectively, as a community." It is estimated that three out of 10 people will be impacted by drunk driving in their lifetimes.
Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, MADD has helped save more than 300,000 lives since its founding. Two women from California and Maryland outraged over the death and injury of their young daughters at the hands of repeat-offender drunk drivers started the grassroots activism needed to turn the country's attention to this serious issue. Now, with more than 600 entities nationwide, MADD's goal is to save more lives and prevent injuries. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities occur nearly every 30 minutes...this is just unacceptable.
To help raise public awareness about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving, participating Maid Brigade locations made donations and distributed MADD Red Ribbons to their clients during the spring. The ribbons are designed to be tied to a vehicle antennae (or other visible location on the vehicle) as a pledge to drive safe and sober. "We're working with MADD to clean up the streets for the safety of our community," says Puett.
