Funkstown Bridge Opens

Funkstown Bridge Opens

The historic stone arch bridge on East Oak Ridge Drive at Funkstown opened to traffic on Friday, December 12th at 4:20pm.
Impatient drivers crowded construction vehicles in their haste to drive across the newly renovated bridge, closed since August for necessary repairs.
Public Works Director Joe Kroboth said the bridge was able to open some 5 weeks ahead of schedule due to good weather during the fall and the contractor's' desire to finish ahead of schedule.
As part of am promise top the citizens of Funkstown and local merchants to find ways to complete the project before the end of 2008, incentives of $1,500.00 per day for early completion were included in the contract. A total of $45,000 in incentives will be paid.
In other bridge news, following a public meeting on December 2nd in Sharpsburg, The County Engineering Department will change its projected timeline for Rehabilitation of the Harper's Ferry Road stone arch bridge at Antietam.
Deputy Director of Public Works Rob Slocomb said the original plan was to renovate the Harper's Ferry Road structure in the spring, detouring traffic onto Mills Road.
However, citizen input indicated a smaller culvert/bridge on that road is prone to frequent flooding and could present a hazard to traffic.
Replacement of the Mills Roads bridge was also included in the Capital Improvement Project Budget, and was expected to be completed next summer.
Following the public meeting a decision was made to flip the projects, with Mills Road bridge project taking place first, in the spring.
