County Commuter to Link with Senior Center

County Commuter to Link with Senior Center
by Norman Bassett, Public Information Officer
Washington County, Maryland

The Washington County Transit Department has announced that fixed-route County Commuter bus service to the Washington County Senior Center will begin on December 15th, in the latest cooperative measure between the Board of County Commissioners and the Commission on Aging. The Senior Center is currently located in the Girl's Inc. building located at 626 Washington Avenue.
To serve a wider area of Washington County, Transit staff has made the necessary adjustments for the weekday in-bound segment of the Long Meadow Northern trip route up West Franklin Street to Winter Street, stopping at the intersection of Winter Street and Washington Avenue.
The route will run to the Transfer Point via Washington Ave/Street for connections to other buses.
Cost to Seniors is 95 cents during peak time, and 60 cents during off-peak times, which are 9:45am-2pm and 7-9:45pm, Monday through Friday per one-way trip, which includes one free transfer.
Transit Director Kevin Cerrone said, "This type of service will benefit a larger amount of the general population. Our fixed-route service also connects with many of the senior housing complexes and pockets of population that may have an interest in the programs being offered at the Senior Center."
The Long Meadow Northern Route runs every hour at 15 minutes after the hour and was chosen in an effort to minimize any disruptions in service.
Currently the "Taxi Voucher" (SSTAP) program for seniors, age 60 and above, and the Paratransit program for individuals with disabilities of any age, provides service the Senior Center on a curb-to-curb basis.
Taxi vouchers are available for $3.75 for a book of vouchers valued at $10.00 and the Paratransit program is $2.00 per one-way trip. Both programs require an application to determine eligibility of usage.
Additional information on the modified route is available by calling County Commuter at 240-313-2750, or by accessing the County Commuter web site by clicking the Bus Stop icon on the Washington County website, www.washco-md.net.
