C & O Canal Emphasizes Safety in Winter Visits

C & O Canal Emphasizes Safety in Winter Visits

Hagerstown, MD- C&O Canal is a great place to recreate during the winter. The towpath is less crowded in most places, and with the leaves turning and falling, frost, and the possibility of snow, the park can really be what Justice William O. Douglas called "a long stretch of quiet and peace."
Prepare for your trip on the canal by taking a few precautions.
Dress warmly, but layer your clothing so that you can adjust to changing temperatures. Bring a cellular phone and first aid kit with you in case you have problems. In preparation for winter, park staff turns off the water at all campsites and picnic areas by November 23, so bring your own water with you.
The watered sections of the canal are popular places to ice skate.
Ice-skating throughout the park is at your own risk, and skating is prohibited in the Widewater area of the park near Anglers Inn.
Enjoy your safe winter visit to the C&O Canal.
