County to receive Rural Legacy Funds

Governor Robert Ehrlich has announced award of $1.8 million to help preserve agricultural and open space land, through the Washington County Rural Legacy Program for the current fiscal year. The announcement was made by Board of County Commissioners' President Greg Snook in the Commissioners' meeting on September 19th.
The Rural Legacy Program was created to preserve some of Maryland's best natural, agricultural and cultural areas, as well as representing Maryland's most significant rural landscapes.
In Washington County, the Rural Legacy Program is focused on lands around Antietam Battlefield and has permanently protected 3,227 acres.
Twenty-four preservation projects have been completed to date using $7.3 million from State funds with match by the County derived from in-kind services.
