Civil War Heritage Area Announces Deadlines for Grant Program

Advisory Boards from Three Maryland Counties including Washington County, have announced availability of Civil War Heritage matching grants and loans for non-profit organizations.
Anticipating that the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area (HCWHA) will be certified as a Maryland Heritage Area in May, the three-county Advisory Board for the heritage area announces deadlines for FY 2007 Maryland Heritage Area Authority project grant applications. The deadline for submission is March 22, 2006.
Noncapital Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) project grants of up to $50,000 are available through HCWHA for planning, design, interpretation and programming. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and local jurisdictions located within the heritage area, which comprises parts of Frederick, Carroll and Washington Counties. Proposed activities must address or complete a priority activity identified in and consistent with the goals, objectives, strategies and actions outlines in the approved heritage area Management Plan available at www.heartofthecivilwar.org.
Capital Project grants of up to $100,000 are available only within Target Investment Zones: Middletown, Taneytown and Hagerstown. The following activities may be assisted with capital grants, providing the project addresses or completes a priority activity identified in and consistent with the goals of the heritage area Management Plan: acquisition, development, rehabilitation, restoration, and pre-development costs.
Applicants must discuss their proposals with their local heritage area contact. FY 2007 MHAA project application packages area available at www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/ under forms and documents. Application deadline is March 22, 2006, and Washington County applications should be submitted to Steve Goodrich, Planner, Washington County Dept. of Planning & Community Development, 80 West Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.

The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority will take action on FY 2007 grant proposals in June. Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area grant recipients may access funds after certification of the heritage area is final.
