County Comment: County honors outstanding students

County honors outstanding students

Hagerstown, MD (December 13, 2011): As part of its regular meeting, the Washington County Board of County Commissioners honored four middle school students with Youth Meritorious Awards for their academic success and contributions to then community.
Honored for November were Michael Bair of Boonsboro Middle School, and Alexandru Circa of Western Heights Middle School. Honored for December were Malin Brokstorp of Northern Middle School, and Emily Ragland of Springfield Middle School.
Michael Bair, an 8th Grade Student at Boonsboro Middle School is the son of Michael and Rebecca Bair, and was nominated by Guidance Counselor Lauren McDermott.
Michael has made honor roll or distinguished honor roll every marking period of his middle school career. He participates in art club, marching band, and the youth group at his church. Teachers and fellow peers report that Michael is a respectful, hard working student who is kind to everyone. He is a talented writer and artist, winning art competitions at Boonsboro Middle School. He enjoys running cross-country, working with electronics, building things and biking. Michael is a positive role model at Boonsboro Middle School and has been called an upstanding member of the Boonsboro community as a whole.
Alexandru "Alex" Circa, an 8th Grade Student at Western Heights Middle School is the son of Corneliu and Daniela Circa and was nominated by teacher Diane Musick.
Alex is a leader among his peers; he was a Student Government Homeroom representative for his class last year. This year, Alex is a WEB leader, in a select group of 8th-graders who help the new 6th-graders adjust to, and learn about, middle school. Alex was one of about 70 chosen 8th-graders for this prestigious job based on interviews, academics and leadership qualities.
Alex is seen as kind, considerate, polite, and helpful. One of his best attributes is his is a positive attitude. He achieves high marks in all his academic classes in spite of the language barriers he has faced since coming to this country. In September 2011, Alex became a citizen of the United States.
Malin Brokstorp, daughter of Anders and. Anna Brokstorp is a 6th Grade Student at Northern Middle School and was nominated by English Language Learning (ELL) teacher Leann Buchanan
Malin recently arrived in then U.S. from Sweden and is already making great strides in her education. She works with an English tutor outside of school and is learning English very quickly. Not only does she work hard outside of the school day, but has taken on the challenge of all merit level advanced classes this year. It is important to Malin to have a deeper understanding of the language and the content she is learning. She realizes the importance of education, which is admirable for such a young student. Not only is she an excellent student, but also is extremely polite and is appreciative of anyone that helps her.
Emily Ragland is a 7th Grade Student at Springfield Middle School and is the daughter of Jenny Ragland. School Counselor Jennifer Joyce nominated her.
Emily is called a great student and hard worker. For Marking Period 1 she made the Distinguished Honor Roll with all of her grades being in the 90's and above. She is currently enrolled in French class for high school credit. In grade 6 and currently in grade 7 she is an active member of the Art Club at Springfield Middle.
The Board of County Commissioners presents youth Meritorious Awards to students who are deserving of praise for accomplishments in their schools, neighborhoods and communities.
