By Norman Bassett

It's spring and that brings the start of construction season in Washington County. Contractors and County employee crews will be gearing up for the start or continuation of a variety of projects in the next month, says Rob Slocum, Deputy Director of Public Works for Capital Projects Engineering.
You may have already noticed beginnings of the Halfway Boulevard/Massey Boulevard project that Slocum says will be finished in November, adding turn lanes to all approaches to the intersection for improved traffic flow.
The U.S. 40-Edgewood Drive joint project with the State Highway Administration (SHA) will be complete in June, and the Transit Transfer Center off West Franklin Street is also slated to be finished in June.
The one-lane bridge on Barnes Road near Boonsboro will be opened to traffic on completion in May. Phase I-A of the Sheriff's Department Detention Center addition is also scheduled for completion in May.
Infrastructure projects to begin this summer include the Senior Center on the Hagerstown Community College Campus, the Longmeadow/Marsh Pike intersection widening project, and rehabilitation of the Devil's Backbone Park Dam on Antietam Creek off Lappans Road. Maryland Route 68 (Lappans Rd.) will be widened in a joint project with SHA, Slocum said.
