ARCC Arena Work Shapes Summer County Recreation Programs

The Washington County Department of Parks, Recreation and Facilities will shift some programs usually held at the Area Recreation and Community Center (ARCC) at Hagerstown Community College to alternate locations this summer, while a new indoor track is being installed.
Recreation Department Director Jaime Dick announced that effective Saturday, June 5th, 2010 the ARCC Arena (gym) will be closed to the public while that new track is installed. The project will take approximately 7 weeks to complete.
Summer is traditionally the highest use period for County Recreation activities, with summer basketball and softball leagues and summer Play Camps.
The action at the ARCC will not affect business hours at the "Rec" office at the ARCC, which will remain 7am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Adult Fitness and Pre-School programs, which operate in the classrooms and Fitness Center, will not be affected.
Greatest impact will be seen on the High School Boys and Girls Summer Basketball League that will move to South Hagerstown High School this summer. The Summer League begins June 7th, and will run Monday through Thursday evenings until July 22nd.
Recreation wants the community to understand that the change is only temporary and those who participate in and are regular fans of the basketball leagues should continue attend at then South High location.
Washington County Recreation offers a variety of summer programs for area citizens. There are 8 summer youth day camps for children ages 6-12 in parks and at Community Recreation Centers in the County. An average of 600 children participate in the summer camps. A special informational event for parents of children attending the summer camps has been set for Wednesday, June 9th at 6pm at the ARCC. Interested parents are urged to attend.
Drop-in basketball leagues continue to be popular at the Community Centers located at Maugansville, Rockland Woods and Pangborn Elementary Schools. Adult fitness classes are also held at those locations. It is possible to rent Community Center facilities for birthday parties. Information is available by calling 240-313-2805.
All summer programs are featured in detail in the Recreation Department Spring and Summer program guide, on-line at www.washco-md.net/public_works/parks/recreation/brochure.pdf. Or for further information, call the Recreation Office at 240-313-2805.
