Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program
Hagerstown, MD (April 23, 2010): The City of Hagerstown announced the start of a new program created by the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) to provide incentives for residents served by the Hagerstown Light Department (HLD) to purchase Energy Efficient Appliances to replace old units in their homes.
While the program is not officially called the "Cash for Clunker" appliance program, Maryland is participating in the Department of Energy's energy efficient appliance rebate program. Funding is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Under the leadership of the O'Malley Brown Administration, Maryland submitted an application to the Department of Energy on October 15, 2010 for $5.4 million in funding. The program was approved by the Department of Energy in early December, with approval by the Public Service Commission in late February, and launched on April 22, 2010. The program is not retroactive, so purchases made before the program launch will not qualify for the rebate. Rebate applications are available and are offered for qualified products on a first-come, first-serve basis until funds run out. The program was made available by the Maryland Energy Administration and is only open to Electric Cooperatives and Municipal Utilities.
"By utilizing the rebates from this program, our customers can save money in two ways," stated Jason Bachtell, Hagerstown's Light Department Staff Engineer. "One, money can be saved on the purchase of a select Energy Star Rated appliance. Two, after this appliance is installed in the home, electrical consumption by the appliance will be less, saving energy costs. Our customers will save green, being green."
Mr. Bachtell added that a complete list of qualifying appliance models is available on the website, and that it is important to make sure the new model you choose meets the proper criteria.
Information regarding this program can be found at www.energy.maryland.gov/appliancerebateprogram.asp Forms may be printed from the website or can be obtained at the customer service desk at City Hall while supplies last.
