Memory Matters: Forge-Me-Not Gala
Each year the Alzheimer's Association's Greater Maryland Chapter tries to reach out and provide support to the 2,700 people living with the disease in Washington County. We offer services and education to an additional population of over 10,000 family members and professional caregivers who have a loved one with Alzheimer's. Many of these efforts are given at little or no cost to the families, because we know the financial devastation that comes along with the emotional toll of caring for someone with Alzheimer's.
In order to ensure that the quality of services provided continues to improve and to reach out to more people, the Association conducts two major fundraising events in Washington County each year. The 12th Annual Memory Walk was held in October at Hagerstown Community College.
The Third Annual Forget-Me-Not Gala is scheduled for Saturday, February 18 at Fountain Head Country Club from 7:00PM to 11:00PM. Our Honorary Co-Chairs for the event are Anne and Howard Kaylor. The theme of this year's gala is "Remembering Our Downtown Days" Please consider joining us and dancing the night away to the music of the 1950's and 1960's provided by The Shades. A lovely array of hors d'ouerves and light entrees will be served to please the palate and a cash bar is available. Tickets are $45 per person and are available by calling the Association at 301-797-4892.
Another fun part of the Forge-Me-Not Gala is the Silent Auction. A committee of volunteers has been gathering items for bidding. Some of the offerings include dreamy dinner dates, and spoil her rotten salon sessions. An exquisite hand made crystal necklace that was made in Brazil will be available. Another item is a guided tour on horseback of a local historic site. Y2Knit of Funkstown designed a one of a kind white wool poncho exclusively for this year's gala. The most exciting item is a five night romantic escape for two to a lovely cottage in Seaside Florida.
Each year the Gala chooses a local history theme as our way of honoring those who are living with Alzheimer's disease. Often the older memories of an individual are still a source of conversation with families and friends. Our theme of "Remembering Our Downtown Days" will be carried out in pictures and images of downtown Hagerstown and the retail shops that existed in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. How many years ago did you head downtown to purchase back to school items or your dress for the prom? Do you remember browsing at Eyerly's or Rosen's under the watchful eye of your Mom or Dad? We will have a display of memorabilia that is sure to bring up a fond memory or two.
The Alzheimer's Association offers support groups, educational programs, and a telephone help line service that many people utilize for information and resources. Proceeds from the Forget-Me-Not Gala will be used locally to support the 2,700 individuals struggling with Alzheimer's disease in Washington County and the more than 10,000 people who love and care for them.
The costs of hosting the gala are underwritten by corporate sponsor ship. Local companies also donate items for the silent auction. To learn more about how your company can participate in this year's gala and give back to the community, please call the association.
