Memory Matters: 2005 Memory Walk

Memory Matters
2005 Memory Walk

Memory Walk is the nation's premier fundraiser to help those battling Alzheimer's disease. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $175 million for programs and services for individuals with Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers. Please walk with us, along with your friends, family, and colleagues to raise dollars and voices in support of those living with Alzheimer's disease. Did you know that the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease will continue to grow? By 2050 the number of individuals with Alzheimer's disease could range from 11 to 16 million. Participants from all walks of life will come together to raise money and awareness about Alzheimer's disease and the Alzheimer's Association.
The 12th Annual Memory Walk in Hagerstown will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at Hagerstown Community College. Registration begins at 1pm and the walk will begin at 2pm.
A fun day is planned for all including visits from the Big Dog company mascot, the Frederick Key's Keyote and the Oriole Bird. Musical entertainment will be provided by soft rock duo, The River. Outback Restaurant will cater the event and provide a delicious meal for all walkers. Children and adults will find activities pre and post walk to delight and entertain.
For the first time in the history of the Hagerstown Walk, entertainment will be provided for those with Alzheimer's disease. "We are thrilled to offer a program in music therapy for our friends with Alzheimer's disease that come to the Walk, said Mary Ellen Mitchell, development coordinator with the Alzheimer's Association. "Music therapy uses simple instruments and rhythms to engage a person with Alzheimer's disease in the process of creating music. We are delighted to be able to offer this program, given that the conditions of hosting a walk at HCC make it possible for many families to bring their loved one with AD to the walk."
Local residents are encouraged to gather with friends, family or co-workers and form a team. Teams are usually composed of five or more people and frequently walk in memory or in honor of a loved one. Each walker who raises one hundred dollars will receive a t- shirt on the day of walk and a chance to win a variety of door prizes. Incentive prizes are also available from the national Alzheimer's Association for those who raise over three hundred dollars each. Please visit the Memory Walk site at and join with your friends, family and colleagues to walk with us and to raise your voices in support of those living with Alzheimer's disease.
