Citizens should prepare for possible flooding, high winds

As Tropical Storm Ernesto approaches the area, citizens are encouraged to make preparations in advance. Washington County's Department of Emergency Management Office advises citizens to take steps to protect property against the possible effects of flooding and high winds:
* Determine if your property is in a flood-prone or high-risk area
* Make sure you have flashlights and batteries on hand
* Secure lawn and garden equipment and outdoor furniture, bring houseplants indoors
* Discuss the weather with your family, and if conditions warrant, develop a home evacuation plan
* Make sure you have supplies of food and water adequate for several days and don't forget your pets' needs
* Farmers should make advanced preparation to move livestock from flood-prone areas to higher ground
* Gas up your car and make sure you have gas on hand for power equipment, should the need arise
* Determine the needs of family members who may live elsewhere, especially elderly persons
* Make note of where gas pilot lights and water mains are located, and become aware of how to shut off utilities, if necessary
* Clear clogged rain gutters and ensure dead limbs are removed from trees near your home.
* Make sure your personal property inventory is up to date
* A weather radio with tone-alert and battery-backup capabilities is recommended, as well as a battery-powered commercial radio
* Stay tuned to local radio and television broadcasts for the latest information
The Washington County Area could receive heavy rain and winds during the latter part of the week as this storm tracks northward.
