Students at Greenbrier Elementary School Hold "Make a Difference" Fundraiser and Help Shelter Animals

Hagerstown, MD: Students in Ms. Linda Forrest's GATE, Gifted and Talented Education, class at Greenbrier Elementary in Boonsboro recently held their annual "Make a Difference Challenge" and donated the proceeds to the Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC). Student representatives 5th grader Dylan and 4th grader Samantha brought the donation of $1,020.00 to the shelter on Wednesday April 3, 2013
The 19 GATE students from the fourth and fifth grade classes were given the challenge to "Make a Difference" and began brainstorming charities. They broke into small groups and extensively researched the charities they wanted to concentrate on. The students created PowerPoint's and presented them to fellow GATE students. The class then voted on the charities they wanted to fundraise for and three stood out: the Humane Society of Washington County, The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and the World Wildlife Fund. The HSWC turned out to be the number one choice of the students.
"We are honored to be the top choice for the students," said Mike Lausen, Executive Director of the HSWC. "This donation from the Greenbrier Elementary School students really made an impact. I know they worked very hard on this project and we are grateful to them."
The students designed a coin drive fundraiser and promoted it making public service announcements on the school public address system, designing posters and collection bins that they placed in designated areas in the school, and making presentations to other classes of students. Classes participated by placing the collection bins in every room and competed to see who could raise the most money.
The first place honor went to Ms. McHenry's second grade class. The reward was to receive extra recess time and a Kona Ice Treat. Mrs. Franko's 2nd grade class was in 2nd place, 3rd place was Mrs. McCray's 2nd grade class and 4th place was Mrs. Cornelius' Kindergarten class. The 2nd through 4th place winners won the ice cream treat of their choice.
