HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 25, 2013) -- The Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Department will now be able to better serve the community thanks to the support of local farmer, Ben Flaherty, and America's Farmers Grow Communities.
Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, which is the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, Grow Communities provides eligible farmers the chance to win a $2,500 donation for a local nonprofit organization of their choice.
Flaherty selected the Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Department to receive the $2,500 donation.
"We will equip Rapid Intervention Team bag that will contain a collection of equipment such as a one-hour air cylinder, spare air hoses, and various hand tools vital to the success of the team and allows them to deploy quickly and efficiently," said Longmeadow Volunteer Fire Department President Kiel Lyons.
"They are great group of people; they have responded to fires on our farm and I really appreciate all their hard work and dedication," said Flaherty.
This year, the Monsanto Fund will invest nearly $6 million in rural America through Grow Communities, which includes double donations for counties that have been declared natural disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to drought.
In Maryland, $60,000 is being given across 14 counties.
America's Farmers Grow Communities is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund to partner with farmers in helping them positively impact their communities. This program is part of the Monsanto Fund's overall effort to strengthen rural America. For a complete list of Grow Communities winners and more program information, please visit growcommunities.com.
