Retreat through Williamsport Civil War weekend

Williamsport, MD: The 3rd Annual Retreat through Williamsport: Civil War Weekend will be held Friday, July 13th through Sunday, July 15th, 2012, in Williamsport, Maryland. This event notes the 149th anniversary of the closing days of the Gettysburg Campaign. The weekend events are presented in partnership with the Town of Williamsport and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Activities will be held at the Town of Williamsport Springfield Barn and at the C&O Canal National Historical Park Cushwa Basin.
Following the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1863, the Confederate Army retreated through Williamsport, Maryland. The Retreat through Williamsport: Civil War Weekend interprets the events of the Confederate and Union Armies in and around Williamsport from July 5-14, 1863. Through 2013, the Town of Williamsport and the C & O Canal National Historical Park will continue building events and programs to commemorate the approaching Sesquicentennial, 150th Anniversary of the Civil War retreat through Williamsport.
Friday, July 13:
Springfield Barn - 7 p.m. Showing of Springfield Middle School videos produced as part of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student Program. Student videos will feature Civil War-related occurrences in and around the Town of Williamsport.
Saturday, July 14:

9:30 a.m. Tim Snyder lecture "C&O Canal and the Maryland Campaign"
10:30 a.m. Shenandoah Valley Minstrels performance of Civil War music
11 a.m. Jim Plunkett lecture "Free Masons and the Gettysburg Campaign"
12 p.m. Reenactment of the Wagoneers Fight of July 6, 1863
1 p.m. George Frank lecture "Battle of Falling Waters July 14, 1863"

Williamsport River Bottom Park - 7 p.m. Bonfire with Singer and Storyteller Matthew Dodd, and first person storytelling by C.W. and Rhonda Whitehair
Sunday, July 10th, 2011:
Cushwa Basin - 10 a.m. March to Falling Waters. Visitors will hear excerpts from soldiers' letters from those who participated in the Gettysburg Campaign and retreated through Williamsport. Letters will be read by Confederate and Union re-enactors along the 5.5-mile hike to the Falling Waters Potomac River Crossing. Although there is no cost for attending the program, the hike is limited to the first 100 participants. Reservations are required. The C&O Canal Association is providing a bus for a return trip to Cushwa Basin.
