Internationally renowned dog trainer to take part in polar bear plunge

Hagerstown, MD: Internationally renowned dog trainer, behavior consultant and owner of Peaceable Paws Dog and Puppy Training Pat Miller will be participating in the New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge that will take place at the Williamsport Boat Ramp in Williamsport, MD. Although she hates cold more almost than anything, Pat, wife of Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC) Executive Director Paul Miller, agreed to go into the icy waters of the Potomac if she could raise $5,000.00 in pledges.
_Paul Miller has done the pledge each New Year's Day for the past eight years. Pat his steadfastly supported her husband's forays into the water but has remained a dry spectator on the sidelines. This year will be different. Last spring a trainer-friend suggested she take the plunge herself. Wanting to help bring attention to the adoptable animals at the HSWC and wanting to help raise funds for the shelter she decided she would become an aquatic participant if she could raise a significant amount of money in pledges. The bar was set at $5,000. With just over a week to go she is only $500 shy of her goal.
"I must admit that I am a little anxious about this," said Miller. "People that know me know that I hate to be cold so this is really going to be tough," she added with a smile. Donations have come from as far away as Australia. If Miller succeeds, she will help this to be the most successful Polar Bear Plunge to date. Last year's highest pledge earners were Karol Kennedy and Dan Plotner who brought in over $1,000 each, helping to set a record of over $8,000.00 for the fundraiser.
Now an official city event for the town of Williamsport, the event has grown from a dozen brave souls to more than 300 animal-loving supporters. Truly a spectator event, several hundreds watch from the shore as their friends and family take the plunge. You can see video of the 2010 Plunge by visiting . Santa, Gumby, and the Travelocity Gnome even participated.
