Northwood Pool and Tennis Club

Northwood Pool and Tennis Club
The best kept secret in Hagerstown's north end
Northwood is starting their 53rd year of operation

Members already know that Northwood Pool and Tennis Club is the place to go during the long, hot, humid days of summer. Now with Northwood's 2011 membership drive in full swing, they welcome the public to check them out. Open Houses will be held every Saturday in May from 12 to 2pm.
Northwood Pool is owned by its members. "Each of Northwood's members has stock options - so we all own it," Larry Hammond said, President of Northwood Pool. "Our board of directors listens to the members and makes decisions based on what is appropriate for the club."
Established 53 years ago, Northwood Pool sits on 5-acres off of Pennsylvania Ave behind Dunkin Donuts in Hagerstown's north end. The property is completely fenced-in and a staff member is at the entrance as club members enter. "Parents will feel relief knowing that their children can't go in and out by themselves...the children are free to run the grounds and are safe to do so," Hammond said. "Many staff members return every year to work at this great facility and to keep in touch with old friends. Everyone knows each other at the club."
Separate from the pool and the baby pool, Northwood offers their members many ways to relax and enjoy the summer. The Club has an oversized pavilion with picnic tables and vending machines, as well as a full size bathhouse. For the kids, Northwood has two tennis courts, a shuffleboard, a basketball court, a ping-pong area, tether ball, volley ball, a make shift wiffleball field, an area for throwing lacrosse balls, and two soccer nets. "There's plenty of room for kids to run and make up their own games," Hammond said. "It's all grass, except for the tennis courts. Northwood's grounds are well manicured, which gives members and guests a welcoming, comfortable feeling. It's a pleasant relaxing place to spend the summer. The area is open and the atmosphere is social and relaxing ... stop by to catch some rays, or just relax under an umbrella, surrounded by your friends and family.
Northwood Pool provides swimming lessons for children of members in three different sessions during the summer, as well as tennis lessons for all age groups. Northwood also has tennis lessons in the evening geared toward adults and their particular skill level. "Our tennis instructor, Bob Stambaugh, is a USPTA certified tennis coach and is back for another year. You will find a hitting wall on the courts to use at your convenience. The tennis courts are open to members year round, we provide a key for entry into the facility for after pool hours and before and after the season," said Hammond.
The Club has a renowned swim team that participates on the Interstate Swim League. Northwood's Swim Team has a very strong history of developing collegiate level swimming athletes with several of its members going on to obtain athletic scholarships. Several swim team members have continued their experience and now coach the sport on different levels. Northwood has begun the process to rebuild the swim team to its competitive level of the years past. So if you are interested in the swim team activities, Northwood is revitalizing its swim program and needs you.
Northwood is proud to announce the addition of a new swim team coach for 2011, Tanner Beal, a former Northwood Swim Team member during the past ten years. Tanner swam for St. Maria Goretti High School for four years and was captain of the swim team his senior year. In high school, Beal was the Apple Valley League Champion in the 200 IM two years running and also won the championship in the 500 free. Tanner believes that he will be able to teach the children of the swim team the correct swim strokes and help them better themselves and enjoy swimming. Beal is currently swimming in college at St. Vincent College, a Division II NCAA school. Tanner loves working with children and enjoys the positive atmosphere of Northwood Pool. Beal understands that Northwood is rebuilding the swim team and he is very enthusiastic about the 2011 season.
When asked what the differences are between a private pool versus a public pool, Hammond said, "With a public pool...anyone can go. A private pool means you're restricted to just those families who use the pool, with their approved guests. A public pool is managed by the City of Hagerstown, whereas a private pool has their own by-laws and pool regulations. The board of directors meets once a month year round to discuss what needs to be changed or improved for the better of the membership.
Northwood offers three family events during the year. In June they have a Family Fun Night that includes a potluck dinner and or lunch, games for the children to play, and a DJ for the family. For July 4th, they have another potluck lunch, with games and activities for the children. Then in August the Club winds down the year with another Family Fun Day, which includes games and a DJ. All are family oriented and are geared to let families meet other families and for the kids to make new friends.
Even though there are no concession stands, small snacks are available at the vending machines and the front desk. Members are also welcome to pack a lunch, grill at one of the charcoal grills at the pavilion, or just order pizza and take it down to the pavilion or to one of many patio tables around the pool.
Northwood has an active 2011 membership drive started. For each new qualified member that joins Northwood, the new member receives a $100 credit during that season once you have met all the financial obligations. Joining Northwood is easy. Visit www.northwoodpool.com and click on "How to Join" under the "Membership" link and follow the steps outlined.
Joining the Northwood Pool Club can give you an entire summer season of something to do for the family, and it is more cost effective than going on vacation for a week. As times have changed, Northwood has evolved with the times. New members can now join for only $575 the first year, (eligible under the finance program only), credit cards are accepted - see any board member and or www.northwoodpool.com for details. The finance program is a great opportunity for new members who are not interested in spending a considerable amount of upfront money to join a quality pool. So take time to find out more about Hagerstown's best kept secret for family entertainment. Vacations may be hard to come by...so for less than a weekend at Ocean City you can become a full fledged member at a quality private pool for an entire summer of family activities, as well as meet new friends.
"We are the best deal in town," said Hammond. "Becoming a member of Northwood is good for families and friends. Members are welcome to join the board of directors, and are welcome to use the facilities all year long," Hammond said. "But your only obligation is to come and enjoy the summer with your family."

The pool opens Memorial Day weekend for swimming. Remember our Open Houses in May - every Saturday from 12-2pm. Call or email to become a full member today! Stop by and take a tour, ask questions and see what we are all about.
