CVSM Community Symphonic Band to present concert on January 31

CVSM Community Symphonic Band to present concert on January 31

Chambersburg: The CVSM Community Symphonic Band will be holding its annual winter concert at 3pm on Sunday, January 30, at Chambersburg Area Middle School auditorium, 1151 E. McKinley St., Chambersburg, PA. Admission to the concert is free, although donations to the non-profit Cumberland Valley School of Music are gratefully accepted.
The band includes musicians from all walks of life, including many professional musicians and educators, who enjoy playing challenging concert band repertoire, which runs the gamut from classical music and concert marches to jazz and musical theater.
This concert marks the first performance under the expert leadership of new conductor Tim Gotwald, who is taking over from founding conductor David Wenerd (who had led the band since its inception in 1993). The eclectic and challenging program includes "National Emblem" by E. E. Bagley, "Blue Tango" by Leroy Anderson, "The Hagerstown Fifers" by Warren Barker, ""Concord" by Clare Grundman, "Die Fledermaus Overture" by Johann Strauss, and "Opening Night on Broadway".
Band director Tim Gotwald recently retired from the Chambersburg Area School District after 37 years of service. He taught both elementary music and was the CASHS band director. He is an accomplished flutist and saxophonist and plays regularly with the Hagerstown Municipal Band, the CVSM Jazz Quartet, CVSM Concert Jazz Band, Mercersburg Community Chorus orchestra, Buzz Jones Big Band, and other ensembles. He holds a B.S. in Music Education from Susquehanna University.
The Cumberland Valley School of Music is a non-profit member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, with over 600 students and 50 faculty members. The school teaches lessons and classes on all orchestral and band instruments as well as voice, piano, and guitar, and offers a wide variety of programs and ensembles for students of all ages, from toddlers to adults, at locations in Chambersburg, Waynesboro, Mercersburg, and Hagerstown. For more information call the Cumberland Valley School of Music at 717-261-1220 or visit their website at www.cvsmusic.org.
