Butterflies Beauty

Butterflies Beauty

Butterflies are one of those creatures that send a flicker of excitement, an electric spark, if you will, through our minds and body simply by fluttering past us. They are the symbol of spring and the pleasure of summer.
Butterflies have different meanings...depending on where you are in the world and what your beliefs are. The Anglo-Saxons used the word 'butterfloege' because their most common butterfly was the yellow brimstone butterfly. This English influence was brought to the new world. In the colonies, people claimed that at night witches turned into winged creatures and stole butter.
In Russia butterflies are called 'babochka' or 'little soul'. The ancient Greeks called butterflies 'Psyche', which also means 'soul.' In France they are called 'papillon'. The Sioux Indians called butterflies 'fluttering wings'.
Many cultures feel that when we die our souls go to heaven as butterflies.
Join Dave Kaplan, butterfly hobbiest, at the Discovery Station, 101 W. Washington St., Hagerstown at 2pm, as he explains the flight of the Monarch butterfly from Mexico to Maryland.
