The Katie Fund: Helping to Bring Katie Home

"The Katie Fund"
Helping to Bring Katie Home

The Williamsport Athletic Boosters will be holding a Pancake Breakfast on February 7 from 7-11am in the High School's cafeteria to benefit a Williamsport High School student, Katie Stains. Katie, a senior cheerleader, was diagnosed over the holidays with Ewing's Sarcoma, an aggressive cancer. This has put her family under enormous emotional and financial strain.
"The Athletic boosters are seeking help from the community businesses, members, families, coaches, friends, and beyond to help us pull off this event on short notice."
Katie's Story
Katie was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Oncology department on Monday, December 22, 2008. She went in for pain management and had a biopsy on her tumor that was found in her hip. After the surgery they found fluid on her lungs - pneumonia.
On Christmas Eve Katie was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. Ewing's Sarcoma is a small cell sarcoma that's a very aggressive form of caner. Katie's cancer has no w spread to her lungs. She started chemotherapy on Christmas Day and is getting ready to start her second round.
Katie will soon be starting her radiation and is most upset that she will not be coming back to school or cheering the rest of her senior year. Physical therapy has been in to see her and she is up and walking a few steps now. "We know that she has weeks ahead of her that will be spent at Hopkins and we hope and pray that she can soon return home to continue her treatment."
While Katie is receiving treatment the family's household bills are continuing to grow as well as her bill at Hopkins. There are regulations as to when Katie is able to return to her home. Hopkins wants life to be as normal for her as possible. That cannot happen without a new "clean room" in her house. A "clean room" is a room that is germ, dust, and mold free. It will take much remodeling of the house to bring Katie home. The family cannot do this without the help of family and friends, her school, and the community.
